Our Story

For decades, Canarsie High School was more than a building; it was a community. A place where students were mentored, fed when they were hungry, encouraged to dream bigger, and reminded that they mattered. Staff showed up beyond their job descriptions. Alumni stayed connected long after graduation. Families leaned on one another during difficult seasons.

In recent years, we began to see members of our CHS family facing homelessness, utility shutoffs, mental health challenges, and unexpected family emergencies, often without a clear place to turn.

Bright Horizons for Canarsie and Beyond was created in response.

Guided by our school motto — “Once a Chief, Always a Chief” — we ensure that no member of our CHS community faces a moment of crisis alone.
